GammaTile features and benefits

The limits of traditional radiation therapy

External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT)

Radiation therapy has long been a standard part of treatment after brain tumor removal surgery. While it can be effective, traditional external radiation has some limitations:

Delays in treatment start

External beam radiation (EBRT) typically requires a 2 to 8-week healing period after surgery, during which tumor regrowth is detected in up to 80% of tumors.2,5,11-13

Damage to healthy tissue

EBRT has to pass through healthy brain tissue, which can cause side effects such as hair loss, fatigue, and cognitive impairments which can significantly affect quality of life.14-16

Poor tumor control rates

Tumor regrowth, due to delays in radiation therapy following surgery, is a primary concern with traditional radiation therapy.12,13,17-19

Interruptions to daily life

Frequent treatment visits can be logistically challenging and emotionally taxing.12,13

The external beam radiation experience was not pleasant for me, so just hearing there was another type of treatment possible gave me hope.

I like the idea that it is in there and is working constantly from the inside. It’s closer to where the tumor is and that it’s going to take care of it without external issues.
